The Tourism Sustainability Certifications Alliance (TSCA) was established in early 2025 with the goal of creating a unified, internationally recognized standard for sustainable tourism. Its mission is to harmonize sustainability criteria and establish a consensus-based framework that ensures both global consistency and transparency. TSCA member organizations provide reliable certification systems tailored to support the sustainable implementation of practices and are committed to actively combating greenwashing. The TSCA plays a crucial role in fostering a transparent and credible market for sustainable tourism.
Consistent Criteria for Sustainable Tourism Practices
The TSCA Standard serves as the cornerstone of this vision by ensuring that all member organizations align their sustainability practices on a shared, clearly defined basis. This ensures consistent and transparent actions worldwide. The standard includes 63 criteria across key areas such as sustainability management, environmental protection, human rights, fair labor practices, and economic development. These criteria provide a structured framework that allows businesses to regularly review and continuously improve their practices.
The TSCA follows a balanced strategy that blends global coherence with local flexibility. While member organizations share common international standards for sustainable tourism, they also allow for local adaptations that address cultural, organizational, and geographical differences. This flexibility enables the TSCA Standard to be universally applicable while remaining adaptable to the specific needs of businesses and destinations. This approach allows them to choose from a variety of certification labels that best suit their operational requirements and the expectations of their guests.
The TSCA Minimal Standard is currently in a peer-review phase and is being carefully examined before it is officially released. All relevant information and updates are regularly made available on the official TSCA website at www.tourismsustainability.org.
Unified Requirements for Certification and Auditing
A key milestone for the TSCA is the introduction of the Certification Manual, which now serves as the foundation for standardized certification processes. While the 63 criteria of the TSCA Standard outline the sustainability practices to be assessed, the manual describes how these practices are to be evaluated. It sets clear requirements and procedures for conformity assessment, aligned with international ISO standards, and structures the entire certification process—from application to evaluation, decision-making, and surveillance. By introducing the manual, the TSCA ensures that all certifications are conducted in an independent, objective manner, adhering to the highest international standards. This enhances the transparency and credibility of sustainable tourism and ensures that all processes meet the highest levels of impartiality and reliability.
Through the ongoing development of the Standard and the Manual, the TSCA guarantees that the system complies with the latest legal requirements, such as the EU Green Claims Directive, ensuring reliable verification of sustainability claims.
Collaboration at the Core
The TSCA emphasizes open collaboration and active engagement with industry associations and stakeholders to establish sustainable certifications as a key factor in the future development of tourism. The alliance continues to grow and invites all certification organizations to join the shared standard. By participating, organizations can benefit from global networking and a well-established, reliable system that ensures transparency and credibility. Join this movement and contribute to establishing sustainable tourism as a global standard, fostering a future-proof, responsible, and equitable travel industry.
